Welcome back to another action-packed term. We particularly welcome our new students in reception: Evy, Izabella, Pihu, Tegroop, Samar, Yayin, Sienna, Maisie, Naithan, Avin, and Megan, together with their families. We also have 2 new students in Year 3, Anna and Arnish, and we trust that for all of these young people, their time at St Bernadette’s will be filled with joy, growth and lots of wonderful learning.
Each year we conduct the Living, Learning, Leading survey with all stakeholders in the school. You will receive instructions from your teachers regarding the survey at your Learning Plan meetings with further reminders from us next week. The survey takes no more than 10 minutes and needs to be completed by August 18…we’re aiming for 100% participation from families!
On Wednesday, we celebrated St Dominic’s Day together as a school community. The day started with a Liturgy led by the Year 4/5L class, followed by Dominican learning in class and then whole school house team rotations which were led by our Staff. This was an excellent opportunity for all students to develop relationships with other students in their house teams, for older students to display their leadership skills and for the school to show our strong sense of community. In particular, the positive feedback provided by students highlighted the engaging activities they participated in during the house team rotations and the deepening of knowledge around our Dominican charism and the four Dominican Pillars.
In a few weeks we are pleased to provide a fabulous opportunity to learn more about supporting your children through the middle primary years. Through a grant received by the Government we have managed to secure Madhavi Nawana Parker, one of Australia's leading experts on Wellbeing and Resilience. She will cover topics such as emotional regulation, friendship skills, conflict resolution, resilience, wellbeing and much more! Madhavi will be presenting at St Bernadette's on Tuesday the 29th August from 6pm and we highly encourage your attendance to this event. Please see the flyer below and book via the QR code or by calling the office. A creche will be available for children over the age of 2 years. The PIE grant program is supported by the Office of the Minister for Education, Training, and Skills, Government of South Australia. Catholic School Parents South Australia is responsible for administering the grants for Catholic Schools in South Australia.
And finally…a reminder that Book Week is not far away....time to start preparing your costumes for one of our favourite days of the year! See the flyer below for more information.

This term the mid-year Reception children have started school. We welcome Tegroop, Samar, Evy, Pihu, Yayin and Izabella to Mrs Akerman's Reception class, and Avin, Maisie, Megan, Sienna and Naithan to Mrs McCann's Reception class. We would also like to welcome Anna and Arnish to Mr Ascione's Year three class.
The children have quickly settled into class and school routines and have been curious and keen to learn. They have enjoyed making friends and exploring different areas in the class and around the school.
On Wednesday this week, we all enjoyed celebrating St. Dominic day. We learnt all about St. Dominic and the four Dominican Pillars of Study, Prayer, Community and Ministry. The children enjoyed travelling to different classes and working with different children and teachers on a variety of tasks. These tasks included making prayer beads, art and craft, making mandalas, learning the Dominican prayer and science experiments.
In Term 1 and 2 we completed a novel study on Wonder by R. J. Palacio. We have completed many activities related to the book and the moral of the story at school and for homework.
We completed a homework project reflecting on the book. Some of the projects included a game board with trivia questions, a year book showing all the students and teacher we read about, an auction including some of the special items from the book, power point presentations including key summaries and a diary including entries from our chosen character. We have some very creative members of our class.
In the last week of term we watched the movie to compare the differences and similarities between the book and movie. There were many differences and similarities but overall the message was the same: when given the choice of of being right or being kind choose kind.
We know we are very lucky at St Bernadette’s to be surrounded by such loving, caring and respectful people, and we are thankful that each person in our community has a heart of gold.
